Dundalk Tyke Blue Battles Hard for Tournament Win in Honeywood
Submitted By mbroderick on Sunday, March 17, 2013
With five very strong teams arriving in Honeywood on Saturday, March 16th, Dundalk Tyke Blue knew that they would be in tough.  Honeywood organizers worked hard to create a fun tournament with strong competition, inviting, Tyke Blue, Walkerton and Meaford to compete against the two Honeywood teams who has blitzed the competition this year.

In Blue's first game of the tournament, they faced a strong Walkerton team.  With memories of an exciting 4-3 win against Walkerton Red in the Paisley tournament, Blue felt good about their matchup but knew that they had to play their best to be successful.  In the first period, Dundalk got off to a very quick start with a great three way passing play between Dante, Brody and Amber.  For the next two periods, Aiden M was flying as he picked the puck up off Walkerton defenders and put pucks past the Walkerton goalie.  Aiden scored five goals in this game, going over the 50 goal mark for the season.  Aidan B, Amber and Brody played strong games on defense, moving the puck out of the Dundalk zone with efficiency and ensuring that Walkerton players did not have major scoring opportunities.  When players did get behind the defense, Jimmy stood tall in the net making many excellent saves and helping Dundalk to a huge first win in the tournament.
Tyke Blue had a short break before their second game against Honeywood 1.  In this game, Blue came out a bit flat and allowed too many scoring chances early in the game.  The first goal of the game for Blue was similar to game one as Brody, Wiley and Dante moved the puck well with Brody finishing with a nice shot to the top corner of the net.  It was clear early that the Honeywood goaltender is very strong, with an excellent butterfly that covered most of the bottom of the net.  Dundalk and Honeywood went back and forth in this one with Aiden M scoring one on the five hole after a nice pass out of the zone from Aidan B.  Amber, playing another strong game on defense added another assist on Aiden M's second goal of the game.  Wiley F completed the scoring for Dundalk in this game, getting to the net and making no mistake.  In the end, Blue lost 6-4, setting up the waiting game to figure out what place they would finish.
After some time and a game between Honeywood 2 and Walkerton, there was a three way tie for second place.  As a result of goals for, Dundalk Tyke Blue had the tiebreaker and the second place ranking, setting up a match with Meaford in the final.
In the season Tyke Blue played the Meaford team twice, winning the first game 3-2 and was shut out 2-0 in the second meeting despite peppering a very strong goaltender with shots.  In this game, Aiden M got Blue off to a quick start with two quick goals with yet another assist to first year up and comer Amber R, and the Broderick's (Joshua and Aidan) assisting on his second goal.  Dante was really flying in this game, scoring the next two goals, one from a nice pass from Aiden M and the other unassisted with a great wrap around try.  The fifth goal of the game really highlighted some of the positional work of Blue as Aiden M took the puck to the net and shot.  After a nice save by the Meaford goalie, Jimmy hustled to the net, found the rebound and made no mistake. Closing the scoring and earning a 6-3 lead for Blue was Aiden M, completing his hatrick.  That is when the game got really interesting.  After an own goal made the score 6-4, Blue began to sit back a bit and Meaford really brought their level up a notch.  After a penalty to Blue, Meaford was able to notch their 5th goal of the game.  In the last minute of the game, there was furious action in the Blue end, with a number of shots fired at Brody V.  With 40 seconds left, Meaford hit the cross bar and a wobbling puck was cleared away by Wyatt.  However, Blue was unable to clear the zone, giving Meaford another shot from the slot on Brody.  This time brody got a piece of it with his shoulder before it again hit the crossbar.  Again the puck was cleared away and the buzzer could not come soon enough.  When it finally sounded, Blue was ecstatic, mobbing goaltender Brody V and enjoying their victory.
Most important, fun was had by all, three tough games really tested the improvement of the Dundalk Tyke Blue team and with two missing players, there was a lot of ice available to all players.  Every player tried all of the positions in this tournament and all players willingly stepped up in those positions.  Amber, Aidan and Wyatt carried most of the defense load, again showing how well they move the puck out of the zone to safe locations.  Brody and Jimmy really stepped up playing forward and defense but also sharing the workload in net.  Many thanks to both of them for taking on the role of goalie.  Josh B really showed improved focus in this one and even played an entire game on defense.  Dante and Aiden continue to be offensive forces, creating chances constantly when on the ice.  Wylie really worked hard, went to the net, showed great improvement in his digging and continues to skate well.  Chase logged a lot of icetime in this tournament and highlighted his massive improved skating and always focuses well on the puck and follows the play far beyond his level of experience.
Dundalk Tyke Blue would like to thank Jamie D for hosting this tournament and giving them the opportunity to play three games, you proved to be a gracious host and you deserve many thanks for your time.
Up next is the Durham tournament next weekend, playing three new teams and ending with a fun day that should prove to offer lots of opportunities for players to show their skills.
